US President Barack Obama sent a White House greeting to the people of Indonesia on Monday as the nation celebrated Independence Day :

Having had the privilege of spending part of my youth living in Indonesia, I have a very personal appreciation for its cultural richness and extraordinary diversity. The people of Indonesia have shown the world that democracy, Islam and modernity can thrive together.  The world has witnessed the tremendous transformation that Indonesia has made over the last decade.

As two global democratic leaders, the United States and Indonesia share many of the same values and responsibilities.  It is from this common ground that we are working to construct a comprehensive partnership that will strengthen our countries cooperation on a broad range of issues.

I look forward to continuing to deepen the American and Indonesian relationship in the the coming years.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
